Blazers finish off softball sweep against Hilltoppers

Host Alabama-Birmingham finished off a three-game softball sweep of Western Kentucky on Saturday, downing the Hilltoppers 4-3 in 11 innings.

Sarah Crawford’s sacrifice fly RBI with the bases loaded plated the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning for UAB (18-26-1 overall, 10-4-1 Conference USA).

The Blazers trailed 3-0 before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

WKU (24-18, 7-8) scored single runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings to build a lead.

Paige Carter was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Haylee Towers went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI to lead the Hilltoppers. Kelsey McGuffin added an RBI in the loss.

WKU’s Shelby Nunn started and got a no-decision after allowing just three unearned runs on seven hits with one strikeout in 5 1/3 innings. Kelsey Aikey pitched the final five innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with a strikeout to take the loss.

The Hilltoppers are back in action Wednesday at home against Kentucky. Game time is 6 p.m. at the WKU Softball Complex.
