Strong pitching carries Gators over Warren Central

Greenwood flexed its pitching depth to take Game 2 against Warren Central.
Mac Ausbrooks carried a no-hitter through six innings as the Gators defeated the Dragons 9-4 on Tuesday night to clinch the District 14 series.
Ausbrooks struck out seven while the Gators’ offense, which earned just one hit, capitalized off Warren Central miscues with seven errors playing into seven unearned runs.
“We capitalized off some miscues and were able to get some runs across, but we’ve got to be better,” Greenwood coach Jason Jaggers said. “We’ve got to be better than we showed tonight.”
Adam Schneller’s two-run double in the third inning to make it a 5-0 lead was the only hit for Greenwood (9-3 overall, 2-0 District 14). Warren Central junior Josh Hurt and senior Justin Alvey combined to walk 10 batters while giving up all nine runs.
The Gators were close to sealing the win in six innings with Alvey walking in two runners to make the Greenwood lead 9-0 with one out, but the Gators couldn’t finish, allowing Warren Central to keep battling in the seventh.
Ausbrooks worked quickly through the lineup with just 47 pitches and carried a perfect game until walking Alvey in the sixth inning.
He didn’t give up a hit until Jordan Lindsey’s single to center field in the seventh inning.
Warren Central (3-4, 0-2) hung three runs in the seventh with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to Hezekiah Pendley, Lindsey scoring on a passed ball and Noah Thomas scoring on a sacrifice fly.
“I thought he did a great job,” Jaggers said of Ausbrooks. “He was 47 pitches in through five innings and in the sixth did a great job. In the seventh we start with an error and then we give up the base hit. I thought that kind of threw him off his game a bit because he was ahead 0-2 on the base hit.
Ausbrooks’ strong night came one game removed from Nate Cunningham, who allowed just one hit through four innings Monday.
“We knew we had a lot of arms, but we didn’t know the depth we really had,” Jaggers said. “We’ve got 12 pitchers on staff and 11 of them have gotten innings. They’ve done a great job for us and we feel confident with whoever we throw out there.”
