Boy Scout group to sell Wildcat Hollow

Wildcat Hollow may soon have a new owner.

The Lincoln Heritage Council, a Boy Scout group that serves 64 counties in Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Tennessee, voted March 23 to sell Badgett Scout Reservation, also known as Wildcat Hollow, a 758-acre tract on Lake Herndon in Russellville.

Though Logan County Fiscal Court expressed interest in acquiring the property roughly a year ago, the government body is no longer interested, Judge-Executive Logan Chick said.

The decision to walk away from the possible deal was based mainly on financial uncertainty as Kentucky struggles to fund its pension system, Chick said.

Fiscal court is uncertain what local contributions to the state’s retirement system will be required and how that will affect the county budget, he said.

“I told (the field representative) with the retirement situation, we’re not too sure about it,” Chick said. “We’re going to be looking for revenues ourselves.”

In February 2017, fiscal court voted to make an offer to purchase the land for roughly $1.1 million, with the intent to build public trails on the land.

Fiscal court voted at its next meeting to rescind the offer, based partly on concerns the county didn’t have any well-defined plans for developing the land.

Lake Herndon, also known as Boy Scout Lake, belongs to the city of Russellville and wouldn’t be involved in the sale of Wildcat Hollow.

A Lincoln Heritage Council news release said the unanimous decision to sell Wildcat Hollow was based on camp facility conditions “no longer meet(ing) an appropriate level of health and safety standards” and the site’s lack of use.

Wildcat Hollow also is not crucial to Boy Scout activities in the area, the news release said, because 98 percent of Scouts in the Lincoln Heritage Council’s operating area live within a two-hour drive of three other camps.

Though no price has been set, money from the sale of the property will fund scouting initiatives in the area, the release said.

“The sale will turn an underutilized camp property into more Scouting opportunities for this area,” said Mac Barr, council board chairman, said in the news release. “Proceeds from the sale will be utilized to grow Scouting initiatives, programs and membership in Logan and surrounding counties. The board’s resolution ensures the Badgett Scout Reservation legacy will still benefit those local Scouting families.”
