Lady Tops score 4-1 win over host UAB

Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis team notched its second conference win of the season after defeating UAB 4-1 on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.
WKU (5-3, 2-0 C-USA) scored the doubles point while adding three singles wins to clinch its first-ever victory over the Blazers.
Lady Topper freshman Moka Ito and sophomore Monica Malinen moved to an undefeated 5-0 this spring season with a 6-4 win over the Blazers’ Marlene Herrmann and Sonia Grzywocz at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomores Natalia De Ugarte and Cindy Oest notched their 26th career doubles win together as they defeated UAB’s Hana Sisirak and Dominika Hrabalova 6-1 in No. 3 doubles, earning the doubles point for WKU.
Ito improved to 15-5 in her inaugural year as a Lady Topper after she beat UAB’s Alexandra Shchipakina 6-2, 6-1 in No 1 singles. Malinen earned another point for WKU at No. 4 singles after she beat Jana Hecking 6-1, 7-5. Oest, playing No. 6 singles, closed out the win for WKU with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sisirak.
WKU heads to DeLand, Fla., for a spring break trip to play Eastern Kentucky and Stetson on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
