Bowling Green High School student Shi’Ann Jones (center) is recognized Monday by Bowling Green Independent School District Superintendent Gary Fields (left) for her achievements during NBC’s “The Voice” at a school board meeting at the school. Jones finished among the top 10 singers.

As Shi’Ann Jones advanced on NBC’s “The Voice,” her high school principal, William King, followed her performances that electrified the Bowling Green community.

“It was amazing week in and week out,” King, of Bowling Green High School, said at a board of education meeting Monday during which the 15-year-old was honored.

“She ended up finishing in the top 10 in America in the show,” King said, noting that Shi’Ann will get the chance to tour the country with the show this summer.

For her part, Shi’Ann said the experience helped her discover a strength she’s always had.

“In this business, you have to have strength,” she said shortly after being eliminated from the show last month.

During her run on the show, Superintendent Gary Fields said he got many calls from BGHS graduates stunned by the talented high school student.

His own 11-year-old son was among her fans, he said during the meeting. His son just couldn’t understand “why all of America was not voting for you,” Fields said.

Despite her incredible talent, Fields said, Shi’Ann remains grounded.

“You see her at school, she’s just a normal kid,” he said.
