Dragons roar past host Trojans for 30-point win

GLASGOW – Whatever ailed Warren Central on Friday night, the Dragons found the cure against host Barren County on Saturday.
Coming off a nine-point win at District 14 rival Warren East that was a little closer than Dragons coach William Unseld liked, Warren Central (13-2) snapped back into form with a dominating out-of-district 77-47 win over the host Trojans.
Taking full advantage of their superior quickness and length, the Dragons hounded and harassed Barren County on defense and ruthlessly picked apart a zone intended to slow down their penetration in the paint. Midway through the fourth quarter, Warren Central even forced a running clock against a usually solid Trojans squad.
The Dragons lit up that zone by sinking 9-of-18 attempts from 3-point range while still getting their points in the paint as they outscored the Trojans 40-22 in that category.
Skyelar Potter, the Dragons’ 6-4 senior guard who’s committed to Wright State, produced his usual offense with a game-high 27 points to go along with nine rebounds. Potter connected on 4-of-7 from 3-point range in the win.
Senior Jordan Cousin delivered a season-high 23 points for the Dragons, although he preferred to do most of his damage inside. Cousin connected on 10-of-16 shots from the field and added six rebounds in the win.
“I was feeling confident,” Cousin said. “I saw my shots and played my role.”
“He’s capable of doing that every night,” Unseld said of Cousin.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Cousin and Potter midway through the first quarter opened up what had been a close game. The Dragons closed the period on a 13-6 run to grab a 22-13 lead, then extended it in the second by forcing seven turnovers. Sparked by Micale Mee and Jamale Barber (game-high four steals), the Dragons defense hounded the Trojans while Warren Central took advantage on the other end to stretch its lead to 44-25 by the break.
Tayshaun Bibb added 12 points in the win for the Dragons.
Jared Coomer tallied a team-high 15 points for Barren County (8-7), which dropped back-to-back games on its home floor after losing Friday to Adair County.
Against the Dragons, it was simply a matter of gambling with the zone to try and manage the interior. It didn’t work for the Trojans.
“You have to give up something to them,” Barren County coach Warren Cunningham said. “They hit their shots.”
Warren Central returns to action Tuesday at home against Hopkinsville. Barren County is on the road Tuesday at Warren East.
