Lady Scotties’ defense stymies ACS

SCOTTSVILLE – Looking to bounce back from a District 15 loss to Barren County on Friday, the Glasgow girls’ basketball team started the new year off on the right foot with a 44-42 victory over host Allen County-Scottsville on Tuesday.
Glasgow forced 21 turnovers – leading to 18 points – and survived a potential game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds to improve to 2-1 in District 15, 9-3 overall.
“I thought the defense was really good,” Glasgow coach Justin Stinson said. “I thought we were able to force them into some turnovers and even when we didn’t turn them over, we were able to speed them up.
“Our district is so strong. We knew coming in that Allen County had a lot more kids back than we had. To come on the road with a young team … and come over here and get a win, it is really impressive for our young kids.”
One cold spell was enough to doom Allen County-Scottsville (7-7 overall, 0-2), with the Lady Patriots behind most of the night after an early lead.
ACS hit its first four shots and built a 10-2 lead before Glasgow’s defense stepped up and helped get the Lady Scotties in front.
Glasgow forced 14 first-half turnovers, the bulk coming during a 15-0 run that gave GHS a 21-12 advantage. The Lady Patriots gained some momentum with seven straight points to close the half, including a 3 from Baylea Cook that made the score 21-19.
Every time it looked like Allen County-Scottsville had some momentum in the second half, the Lady Scotties had an answer.
Back-to-back buckets by Kali Mutter tied the score at 23 early in the second half, but Anzley Adwell hit a 3 to give Glasgow the advantage again.
ACS briefly took a lead 27-26 on Sydney Day’s layup midway through the third period, but Amanda Lee’s shot in the paint pushed Glasgow back in front.
Sarah Sutton’s bucket gave the Lady Patriots a razor-thin lead again until Jaidyn Franklin’s 3 made the score 33-31 in favor of Glasgow.
Adwell opened the fourth quarter with another 3 to stretch the margin to 37-33, but Allen County-Scottsville battled back again – surging in front 42-41 on a jumper from Jae McReynolds with 2:57 remaining.
Adwell struck again, as the freshman guard hit her fourth 3 of the night 23 seconds later to give the Lady Scotties the lead for good.
“She’s a good player,” Stinson said. “Isn’t it nice to have a freshman in a big-time district environment to step up when the game is on the line and make some shots? A lot of freshmen are afraid to shoot that shot. She shot it and, fortunate for us, she knocked them down.”
The Lady Patriots had a chance to win in the final seconds, but Cook’s 30-footer at the horn hit off the rim and Glasgow secured the rebound and the victory.
Adwell led with 19 points, while Ashanti Gore added 13 points and eight rebounds.
“It was a big district game,” Adwell said. “We wanted to show the region we are not what we looked like when we played Barren County. It was just an off night for us. We were ready for this district game.”
Sutton led Allen County-Scottsville with 16 points.
“It’s been our M.O. all year long,” ACS coach Brad Bonds said. “We don’t have enough kids that can step up and score consistently. Turnovers have been an issue game in and game out. I thought we came out well. We made shots. Things seemed to be going (well) and (then) they came with the trap, and turnovers and missed opportunities put us back by about eight or 10. You have to fight and claw and get yourself back in the game.”
Both teams return to action at 6 p.m. Friday. Allen County-Scottsville will host Monroe County, while Glasgow travels to South Warren.
