County school board tables decision on redistricting plan

The Warren County Public Schools board of education delayed a vote on new school boundaries during its monthly meeting Thursday, opting instead to vote in January.
Board Chairman Kerry Young made a motion to table a decision between two proposals that would shift school boundaries to accommodate a new elementary school and ongoing growth in parts of the county.
Young said delaying the decision would allow Superintendent Rob Clayton and other district officials to address comments that community members have made in recent days.
The motion passed unanimously.
Both plans are available online at www.warrencountyschools.org/Content/63270, where parents can view interactive maps and lists of affected streets. Questions and comments about the changes can be emailed to boundary@warren.kyschools.us.
In an interview after the meeting, Young described the comments as questions about which areas are affected, whether areas could be spared from changes and suggestions about the changes.
Young described the feedback surrounding the redistricting process as unemotional. He said he’s only received one email about the changes.
Along with preparing to open the new Jennings Creek Elementary School next fall, district officials have had to manage growth driven by increased development in some parts of the county.
The Traditions neighborhood on Lovers Lane, for example, would go from Cumberland Trace Elementary School to Briarwood Elementary School under both proposals.
The board’s next meeting will be Jan. 18.
In other business, the board reviewed progress on Jennings Creek Elementary School.
The school’s infrastructure is being installed under roofed-in segments of the building, and there’s brick work going on outside. Duct work is being installed, and some classrooms and dividing walls are starting to take shape.
Board Vice Chairman Garry Chaffin said that he was pleased with the progress.
“It looks like good progress to me,” he said. “It looks like they’re doing a good job.”
