After a slew of candidates filed to run for office as qualifying began Nov. 8, a trickle of candidates officially threw their hats into the ring this week.
The two races that have drawn the most candidates so far are for Warren County sheriff and the 32nd District state Senate seat, with three candidates each.
Incumbent Sheriff Jerry “Peanuts” Gaines, a Democrat, filed to run on opening day of qualifying. Two Republicans, Shawn Helbig and Ron Ford, have since filed to run for the seat.
Gaines has held the seat, except for one four-year period, since 1977.
Helbig is a Bowling Green Police Department sergeant. Ford has previously made unsuccessful runs for sheriff.
In the 32nd District of the state Senate, incumbent Mike Wilson, a Republican, is being opposed by Republican Darrell Traughber, the current 6th District county magistrate, and Jeanie Smith, a Democrat.
Two other incumbent Democrat office holders filed to run this week: County Attorney Amy Milliken and Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Cohron.
