South Warren senior guard Amaya Lasley will remain a Spartan at the next level, signing to play college basketball with the University of Tampa on Friday.

“This is just a dream come true to be able to play at the next level,” Lasley said. “I’ve worked really hard, since I was about 6, so I am really excited that I get to sign today.”

Lasley said she considered Northern Florida, Northern Kentucky, Lipscomb and Southern Illinois but knew Tampa, which like South Warren is nicknamed the Spartans, was the right place for her after she visited the campus.

“I love Florida and I love the weather,” Lasley said. “Tampa has a really good atmosphere. The coaches are great. The team is really great. I just feel like I was at home and they treated me like family.”

Lasley enters the season as one of the top players in the region, a big cog in the Spartans’ success since bursting onto the scene as a seventh-grader.

The 5-foot-8 guard has already amassed 2,000 career points, the most in the program’s history. Lasley averaged 17.5 points to lead the Spartans, adding 4.9 rebounds for a South Warren team that advanced to the Region 4 semifinals for the fourth straight season.

Lasley said she is happy to have her college decision behind her.

“It was really stressful, trying to figure out where I am going to go, but now I feel stress-free and I get to focus on the season and winning a region championship,” Lasley said.
