For the second time in the past month, Western Kentucky’s Christina Bragado and Allison Leone were named Monday as Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively.

The honor is Bragado’s second career nod from the conference. Leone is now WKU’s all-time record holder for weekly awards, notching her second of the season and fourth of her career.

WKU (5-8-1, 2-4-1 C-USA) was 2-0 over the weekend with wins over Florida Atlantic on Friday (1-0) and Florida International on Sunday (2-0) at the WKU Soccer Complex. The Lady Toppers are three points out of a conference tournament spot with three matches to play.

Acting as the anchor of the back line at center back as she has all season, Bragado held the Owls and Panthers to four combined shots on goal across 180 minutes.

In goal, Leone collected her fourth and fifth solo shutouts of the season, a mark that ranks second among all C-USA goalkeepers in 2017.

With three saves Sunday, Leone is 14 shy of reaching 300 stops for her career.

The Lady Toppers will return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday at Texas-San Antonio.

Engle picks up 4th

C-USA weekly honor

Western Kentucky volleyball’s Sydney Engle was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, marking the seventh straight week a Lady Topper has been honored by the league.

Engle has now claimed the award four of the past five weeks, marking the first four weekly honors of her career.

Over the past week, Engle continued her role as a crucial piece of the WKU squad. Across the Lady Toppers’ three sweeps during the week, the Floyds Knobs, Ind., native averaged 2.83 points per set, 2.44 digs per set, 2.11 kills per set, 1.33 assists per set, 0.67 blocks per set and 0.33 service aces per set.

Engle hit a collective .349 on the week with 19 kills on 43 swings.

As WKU’s secondary setter on the court, Engle saw 12 of her 20 week eight sets find the floor for kills by her teammates for a .600 assist percentage. Offensively, Engle notched 19 kills across the week.

Sunday’s sweep at Florida International saw Engle come just one kill and one dig shy of another double-double in her senior season.
