Position-by-position breakdown

QUARTERBACK: Western Kentucky’s Mike White hasn’t posted eye-popping stats this year, throwing only two touchdowns and averaging 6.8 yards per attempt. But the Hilltoppers still have a clear quarterback edge over Texas-El Paso. The El Paso Times reported starter Ryan Metz is out, meaning backup Zack Greenlee will likely start. ADVANTAGE: WKU

RUNNING BACK: WKU has four players – Quinton Baker, D’Andre Ferby, Jakairi Moses and Marquez Trigg – listed as potential starters at running back. Ferby (ankle) and Baker (hip, ribs) are both questionable. The Miners’ Quadraiz Wadley was named to the Pro Football Focus Week 5 National Team of the Week after totaling 171 yards and a touchdown on 29 touches Sept. 30 against Army. UTEP

WIDE RECEIVERS: Lucky Jackson (63.2 yards per game), Xavier Lane (52.3 ypg), Nacarius Fant (49.2 ypg), and tight end Deon Yelder (37.2 ypg) have been White’s top targets in the Topper passing game. No one has emerged as a true No. 1 receiving threat. UTEP has minimal talent outside. WKU

OFFENSIVE LINE: The best NFL Draft prospect on the field Saturday will be Miners left guard Will Hernandez. He was a second-team AP All-American last season and, like Wadley, was named to the Week 5 PFF National Team of the Week. UTEP

DEFENSIVE LINE: Running backs don’t have much trouble getting to the second level against UTEP. SB Nation’s Football Study Hall said the Miners rank No. 129 of 130 FBS teams in stuff rate – the percentage of runs where the runner is tackled at or behind the line of scrimmage – at 12.3 percent. WKU

LINEBACKERS: Joel Iyiegbuniwe leads WKU with 33 tackles, and both forced and recovered the Hilltoppers’ first fumble of the year in a Sept. 23 win against Ball State. UTEP linebacker Alvin Jones, twin brother of former Miners star running back Aaron Jones, paces his team with 39 tackles. WKU

SECONDARY: Joe Brown and DeAndre Farris have established themselves as a dynamic cornerback duo for WKU. Brown made late interceptions in each of the Tops’ last two games, while Farris has broken up seven passes. WKU

SPECIAL TEAMS: WKU’s Jake Collins had his best game of 2017 against Ball State, averaging 44 yards per punt. WKU

Brad’s picks

Texas-El Paso is a 0-5 team that’s been outscored by more than 30 points per game and is led by a 71-year-old interim coach who was enjoying retirement this time a week ago. This is a program lacking both direction and talent.

Western Kentucky has shown issues of its own this season but shouldn’t have any trouble Saturday night in the Sun Bowl.
