Western Kentucky’s volleyball team set a new Conference USA record of 30 straight wins against league opponents Friday with a home sweep over Southern Miss.

The Lady Toppers (18-2) improved to 5-0 in C-USA play this season with their fourth straight 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-14) sweep, powered by senior Alyssa Cavanaugh’s 24 kills.

The 30th straight victory over league foes – which includes regular season and postseason action – broke the previous conference record of 29 consecutive wins set by Louisville from October 2003 until the Cardinals left for the Big East Conference. WKU’s record streak began Nov. 1, 2015.

C-USA programs have won at least 20 straight conference matches just five times in the league’s history, including WKU twice. The Lady Toppers also put together a 20-match winning streak in league play from 2014-15.

In addition to the new league record, WKU has also won 14 straight matches overall this season. The Lady Toppers have won 48 straight home contests against C-USA foes at E.A. Diddle Arena. Southern Miss fell to 12-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Cavanaugh’s 24 kills were just two shy of her career high, which she achieved at Florida Atlantic this season in a five-set match. Rachel Anderson added 13 kills and four blocks, while senior Jessica Lucas notched her fifth double-double of the year with 40 assists and 10 digs. Sydney Engle chipped in eight kills and a team-high 11 digs.

The Lady Toppers’ homestand concludes next week as they close regular season nonconference play by hosting Austin Peay at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Diddle Arena.
