Faith Martin found herself with a little déjà vu Monday evening at Bowling Green Country Club.

The South Warren freshman was in a playoff hole at the par-4 first hole against Greenwood senior Sydney Durrant. Just two days before, Martin was in the same exact spot in the Bowling Green Invitational Tournament and lost the hole.

She learned her lesson, changed her approach and parred the hole to beat Durrant and win her third straight girls’ district championship in the VanMeter Cup at BGCC.

“I was just trying to take a completely different approach and have a different outcome,” Martin said. “I knew how that felt and I just tried to calm down more.”

Durrant and Martin entered the playoff tied for the lead with a 2-over par 74 for the two-day event. The first nine holes were played Aug. 14 at Indian Hills Country Club where both golfers were tied for second with a 37, two strokes off leader Allison Wheeler of Greenwood.

Nearly a month later for Day 2 of the event, Durrant and Martin shot 37 again to take the lead from Wheeler, who shot 42 on the final nine and finished the tournament 4-over par 76 to finish third.

Martin’s approach to the playoff hole on No. 1 was the same situation she had against Lizzie Loy of Russell County in a playoff for the BGIT on Saturday. Martin drew her first shot hard to the left behind a tree, chunking the ball in a bunker and two-putting for bogey.

“I didn’t aim as far left,” Martin said. “I just hit it straight down the middle. It worked out.”

Durrant got caught in the rough on her second shot and settled for bogey while Martin parred the hole to win the girls’ district title once again.

“I was three shots back going into today, so I knew I had to play good to win it a third time,” Martin said. “I was just really focused … It felt a lot like match play. (Durrant and I) were both parring everything.”

Durrant and Wheeler’s second- and third-place respective finishes helped Greenwood win the girls’ team district championship with a 329, edging South Warren by seven strokes.

Emily Morgan shot an 87 and Emma Harmon shot a 92 to round out the Lady Gators’ scoring.

“It feels really good,” Durrant said of the team title. “Next year when I’m gone, our team is going to be really strong and I have confidence in them.”

MIXON WINS BOYS’ TITLE

South Warren made it a sweep with the individual district titles, with senior CM Mixon shooting a 2-under 70 to win the boys’ championship. Mixon went 1-under on both days to win while Bowling Green sophomore Collier Curd faded Monday.

Curd sat two strokes behind Mixon in second after the first day at Indian Hills, but went 2-over on the last nine on Monday to finish five strokes off the lead in second place.

Curd’s runner-up finish and Eli Thurman’s 79 to finish third helped the Bowling Green boys win the team championship with a 322. South Warren finished second with a 336 and Greenwood was third at 341.

Bowling Green last won the VanMeter Cup in 2014.

“It’s great,” Curd said. “There’s still room for improvement, but we’re really starting to come together as a team better than we were at the beginning of the year.”

Bowling Green’s win comes two days after finishing sixth in a 23-team field in the BGIT.

“I think it was a really big confidence booster for the team,” Curd said. “Since this is the state tournament course, I think we’ll do better this year than other years.”

Mixon’s district championship follows up his eighth-place individual finish in the BGIT.

“It feels really good,” Mixon said. “Going into this tournament, I knew I had a good chance. Collier Curd and a few other guys on BG have been playing really well and it wasn’t going to be easy by any means. Overall, it feels good to be in this position and playing well.”
