Members of Western Kentucky University’s Sigma Chi fraternity have been offered grief counseling services after a shooting early Sunday morning at 1604 Kenton St. that killed one of their members and left another student facing a charge of second-degree manslaughter.

“It is a tragedy and it is going to have ripple effects,” said Charley Pride, WKU’s director of student activities.

Kenneth A. Davis, 21, died as a result of the shooting, Bowling Green Police Department spokesman Officer Ronnie Ward said.

Police responded to a call at 12:09 a.m. from 21-year-old Peter G. Gall of Bowling Green, who said he’d shot someone, according to Gall’s arrest citation. Officers responded and found the victim, later identified as Davis, bleeding on the floor.

“Through the investigation, it was determined Gall wantonly caused the death of the victim,” according to Gall’s arrest citation. Alcohol was listed on the citation as a factor in the incident. Gall was arrested and booked into the Warren County Regional Jail, where he was being held Sunday on a $100,000 bond, according to online jail records.

Bowling Green attorney Alan Simpson is representing Gall and told the Daily News that Gall’s family wants to extend condolences to Davis’ family.

“My understanding is that this was an accidental shooting,” Simpson said, describing Davis’ death as the result of “horseplay.”

Bob Skipper, director of media relations at WKU, confirmed Sunday that both Davis and Gall are WKU students.

WKU President Timothy Caboni responded to the shooting in a faculty, staff-all email he sent on Tuesday.

“A tragic event over the weekend claimed the life of one of our students and forever altered the lives of others,” Caboni wrote. “Our thoughts go out to all who have been affected by this loss. Staff in Student Affairs have been in touch with these students and their families to offer counseling services and other assistance and will continue to provide support as needed.

“I have communicated with our students to encourage them to support and take care of one another and urge you to do the same. Please watch for signs of stress in those who are having trouble coping, and be understanding with those who may struggle as they work through what has happened. Students can be referred to professionals in our Counseling and Testing Center, located in Potter Hall Room 409. They can be reached at 745-3159 or wku.edu/heretohelp.

“The loss of any student under any circumstance is the hardest part of our jobs in higher education. Thank you for all that you do for our students and for each other.”

Pride, who said he’s met both of the students involved, described the two as friends. He said Gall was never a full member of Sigma Chi but did pledge at one point.

A fraternity brother at the Sigma Chi chapter house Monday said the group’s members declined to comment.

WKU’s Sigma Chi fraternity tweeted its condolences after Davis’ death.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of brother Alex ‘Minkus’ Davis,” the tweet said. “His smile and humorous personality will last forever.”
