The Bowling Green Hot Rods continued to move back in the right direction with a 4-2 win over South Bend (Ind.) on Sunday at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Bowling Green used a two-out, sixth-inning surge to rally back and extend its win streak to four games. The Hot Rods lost a season-high 10 straight before the win streak began on Thursday.
“The last four games have been much better,” BG manager Reinaldo Ruiz said. “We went through adversities those 10 games in a row. That was tough, but I think we learned a lot from those games and the result is the last four games we have been playing much better.”
Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead on a Bobby Melley RBI double in the second inning, but South Bend answered with RBI singles from Andruw Monasterio and Kevonte Mitchell in the third inning to push in front 2-1.
The Cubs remained in front until the sixth, when Bowling Green rallied with two outs and no one on.
Jesus Sanchez started the rally with a walk, scoring off Adrian Rondon’s RBI triple into the right-field gap. After a Bobby Melley walk and a passed ball scored Rondon, Emilio Gustave capped the scoring with an RBI single.
South Bend barely threatened over the final three innings, with one base runner who was promptly erased on a double play.
“When you have a team that battles the way we did tonight, it is going to be really good to go the playoffs feeling good with the momentum we have right now,” Ruiz said.
Gustave paced the offense with two hits, while Sanchez had two runs scored.
OUT OF THE PEN
Right-hander J.D. Busfield earned his first win since June 16 with four innings of hitless relief. The Hot Rods’ opening day starter has worked out of the bullpen since coming off the disabled list on August 24, allowing two earned runs in 8 1/3 innings.
Busfield is no stranger working out of the bullpen. He set the single-season saves record while at Loyola Marymount in 2015.
“It’s really nice right now to have a strong bullpen with the addition of Busfield,” Ruiz said. “It’s good to have him back. The way he has been pitching is fun to watch.”
