Murray State’s 67-7 season-opening win over visiting Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday night featured a slew of former area high school football standouts.
For the host Racers, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jensen Feggins (Warren Central Class of 2015) and junior punter Landon Stratton (Logan County Class of 2014) teamed up for a nifty special-teams play.
Following a touchdown that put Murray State up by three scores, Feggins ran in the two-point conversion when he caught the ball on a pitch from Stratton and ran towards the right side before reversing course to run the entire width of the field to the left corner, where he walked into the end zone for the score.
Feggins finished with one catch for eight yards.
Stratton only punted twice, but made both count in the rainy conditions. He hit two 47-yard punts, well above his career average of 41.8 yards per punt.
For Kentucky Wesleyan (0-1), freshman defensive back Malcolm Johnson (Greenwood Class of 2017) finished with a team-high nine tackles – including six solo stops – tallied the Panthers’ lone interception (and a 6-yard interception return) and added a pass breakup in his first collegiate game. Fellow KWC freshman defensive back Jonathan Ford (South Warren Class of 2017) tallied four tackles, including three solo stops. Freshman defensive end Dalan Cofer (Bowling Green Class of 2017) finished with three tackles, two solos.
KWC sophomore wide receiver Jacob Yates (Bowling Green Class of 2016) returned two punts for 15 yards, with a longest return of 11 yards.
