Second Saturdays on hold, could make comeback

Second Saturdays, the street fairs at Bowling Green’s Fountain Square Park that had been held on the second Saturday of each weather-friendly month before being discontinued this year, are on hold while renovations continue on the square.

But the fairs, which included live music, carriage rides, inflatables and even car shows, could make a comeback.

“There probably won’t be any more until next year,” said Ron Murphy, executive director of The District, which organizes Second Saturdays. “We’re working on some new plans and projects.”

A post earlier this year on the Second Saturdays Facebook page revealed that the events were being discontinued through the end of 2017. “We hope to be back up and running for 2018,” the post concluded.

Doug Gorman, chairman of the Warren County Downtown Economic Development Authority, would also like to see Second Saturdays make a comeback.

“I think any kind of activity you can have in the downtown area has an impact,” Gorman said. “I thought (Second Saturdays) was a great fit. I would love to have it back. People looked forward to it.”

Gorman believes the work being done on the square will enhance Second Saturdays if they are continued.

“It is going to be a great atmosphere downtown when it is completed,” Gorman said. “Fountain Square Park will be a much better venue and will be better for events like this. It will be a more vibrant downtown.”

Murphy said his priority now is planning for Halloween and Christmas events downtown, but he continues to work with downtown merchants on the possible resurrection of Second Saturdays.

“We had tried to expand the concerts,” he said. “But you can only go so far with volunteers. I will get with the merchants and see what they think.”
