Warren County South blanks Belfry to open Little League state tournament

Andrew Milam had eight strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings and James Russell closed the door on an 11-0 shutout victory for the Warren County South 10- and 11-year-old All-Stars over Belfry to open the Kentucky Little League state tournament on Saturday.

Warren County South opened with five runs in the first inning and cruised to a mercy-rule win in four innings in Corbin.

Andrew Coffey had a two-run single and Milam hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first. A two-run homer from Conner Cobb in the second inning stretched Warren County South’s lead to 7-0.

Coffey’s grounder to center field in the bottom of the fourth scored Ethan Reynolds and Bryce Button for the final two runs. Coffey finished with four RBIs on two hits. Button and Cobb each had two hits and two RBIs.

Warren County South will play Fleming County at 6 p.m. Sunday in pool play.

Bowling Green East 8, Paintsville 1

Bowling Green East used five pitchers – all who threw under the 20-pitch threshold – who combined for 13 strikeouts in an 8-1 victory over Paintsville to open the 11- and 12-year-old Little League state tournament in London.

The defending state champions were led by Patrick Forbes’ home run and three runs scored. Dawson Hall had two hits and scored two runs.
