Hot Rods’ rally falls short against LumberKings

The Bowling Green Hot Rods rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but couldn’t pull off the comeback Saturday night in a 7-6 loss to the Clinton LumberKings in Clinton, Iowa.

Bowling Green saw its comeback attempt come up short after Jonah Heim hit a two-run single in the ninth inning to cut the Clinton lead to 7-6.

Michael Koval got the Hot Rods’ Robbie Tenerowicz to ground out with runners on first and third to end the game for his second save of the season.

Clinton’s Gareth Morgan drove in Yojhan Quevedo with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

The sacrifice fly by Morgan came in the midst of a three-run inning and gave the LumberKings a 4-3 lead. Later in the inning, Nick Zammarelli hit an RBI double, bringing home Ryan Scott.

The LumberKings later tacked on a run in both the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, Billy Cooke hit an RBI single, while Johnny Slater got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Scott in the eighth.

Clinton right-hander Brandon Miller (9-4) picked up a quality start and the win after allowing four runs on six hits over six innings. Bowling Green’s Chris Pike (2-3) took the loss in the Midwest League game after giving up five runs and seven hits over five innings.

For the Hot Rods, Josh Lowe doubled twice, driving home three runs.
