FRANKLIN – It will be steak dinners for the Warren County South 10- and 11-year-old all-stars.

As per custom under manager Joey Talley, Warren County South had a culinary motivation in addition to the desire to advance to the state tournament in Thursday’s District 1 tournament championship against Muhlenberg County.

“There’s a general rule on championship Sunday or whatever day of the week it is, you’re either playing for hot dogs or steaks,” Talley said. “You lose, you get hot dogs. If you win, you get steaks.”

Talley will have to open his wallet a little wider after Warren County South romped to a 12-1 win in four innings at Jim Roberts Community Park.

Leading 5-1 in the bottom of the third, Warren County South stretched the lead to 6-1 on Connor Cobb’s RBI single.

Talley’s team was just warming up. Zack Davis followed Cobb with a three-run homer to dead center field to push the lead to 9-1, and later in the inning Bryce Button smacked a two-run homer to left to continue a seven-run outburst.

“Balls were hit hard, both of them,” Talley said. “They’re very good hitters.”

Warren County South finished with nine hits, as Davis and Button tallied two apiece.

Cobb earned the win after recording all but the final out. He allowed one run and struck out six.

Afterward, Talley got an ice water bath that mostly soaked his shoes as his players struggled to get the cooler chest high on their coach.

“Man, this group is special,” Talley said. “They’re good baseball players. This is a combination of three travel teams. When you get very good baseball players to work together – I preached teamwork from the very first day of practice. You have to come together as a team.”

Warren County South will return to action starting July 15 in the state tournament in Corbin.

“We’ll get back to work next week,” Talley said.
