Western Kentucky played 21 innings of softball Wednesday and pulled off two upset victories to advance in the Conference USA Tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Eighth-seeded WKU opened the day with a 12-inning, 12-7 win over fifth-seeded UAB before coming from behind to take down fourth-seeded Florida Atlantic 6-5 in nine innings.
Kelsey McGuffin led the way for the Hilltoppers (29-27), going 7-for-10 at the plate. Eight WKU players registered multiple hits on the day. Adarian Gray recorded a team-best six RBIs across the games.
The freshman Gray hit a go-ahead, bases-clearing double in the 12th inning against UAB that put WKU up 10-7.
McGuffin and Brittany Vaughn delivered RBI hits in the ninth inning against FAU to give the Toppers a 6-4 lead. WKU allowed a run in the bottom of the inning before holding on for the win.
WKU’s 21 innings across two games is a program record and is the second-most innings played in a day in program history. The 12-inning game also ties for the second-longest game in program history.
Florida Atlantic was the C-USA Tournament champion last season. The Hilltoppers’ come-from-behind victory over the Owls was WKU’s 13th of the year.
The Tops now enter the double-elimination portion of the tournament. WKU will face top-seeded Marshall at 2 p.m.
