Hot Rods squander 8-run lead in loss to Lugnuts

Christian Williams scored on a forceout in the seventh inning, leading the Lansing Lugnuts to a 12-10 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Saturday in Lansing, Mich.

The forceout came in the midst of a four-run inning and gave the Lugnuts a 9-8 lead. Later in the inning, Joshua Palacios drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Ryan Hissey. Bowling Green led 8-0 after three innings, but couldn’t hold it.

The Lugnuts later tacked on two runs in the eighth when Williams hit an RBI single and Hissey hit a sacrifice fly to secure the victory.

Bowling Green saw its comeback attempt come up short after Garrett Whitley hit an RBI triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Miles Mastrobuoni in the ninth to cut the Lansing lead to 12-10.

Lansiing’s Jackson McClelland (1-1) got the win in relief, while Elias Torres (1-1) took the loss for the Hot Rods in the Midwest League game. Hot Rods starter Ethan Clark pitched four innings of one-hit, scoreless ball before exiting in the fifth.

Lansing took advantage of some erratic Bowling Green pitching, drawing a season-high 10 walks in its victory.

In the losing effort, the Hot Rods scored a season-high 10 runs and tallied a season-best 13 hits. For the Hot Rods, Whitley was a home run short of the cycle, driving in four runs and scoring three.

Despite the loss, Bowling Green is 4-2 against Lansing this season.

The Hot Rods will try to secure a series victory against the Lugnuts on Sunday. In the finale of their four-game series, Adrian Navas is expected to start on the mound for Bowling Green, while Lansing will counter with righty Justin Maese.

First pitch is at 1:05 p.m. CDT at Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing.
