Former area standouts Harper, Woodall, Spalding put charge into Golden Eagles’ lineup

A trio of former area baseball standouts put a serious charge into Spalding University’s offense on Saturday against Eureka (Ill.).

Spalding sophomore second baseman Matt Harper (Logan County Class of 2015) homered twice, junior Ian Woodall (Logan County Class of 2014) also connected for a home run and sophomore Bryce Spalding (Greenwood Class of 2015) added a homer of his own in the Golden Eagles’ 20-2 victory at Henry Sand Field in Eureka, Ill.

Harper finished the game with a 2-for-4 effort including three RBIS and three runs scored. Spalding also had three RBIs and a run scored, while Woodall – the designated hitter – was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and scored one run.

In Saturday’s first game against Eureka, Harper got his first homer of the day in a 12-1 win. Harper was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and scored a run in that win.

The Golden Eagles picked up a 10-4 win over Fontbonne (Mo.) on Sunday. Woodall was 1-for-3 with an RBI, scored two runs and stole a base. Harper added a run scored and stole a base.

Fontbonne finally cooled the Golden Eagles for an 18-8 win in the nightcap. Harper added yet another home run, a solo shot, in the loss.

Spalding (19-8 overall, 9-2 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Association) returns to action Wednesday at home against Thomas More.

Midway junior Barrett Croslin (Russellville Class of 2014) helped the Eagles win three-of-four against River States Conference rival Asbury.

In Friday’s 15-3 home win, Croslin was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

Croslin connected for a home run in Saturday’s 10-5 win, part of a 2-for-4 day that also included a double and three RBIs.

Croslin added to his totals in the nightcap, ripping a triple and finishing the game with two RBIs along with a stolen base and a run scored in Midway’s 7-1 win.

Midway (22-16 overall, 19-5 River States) is back in action Wednesday at Cumberlands.

Cairn (Pa.) sophomore pitcher Sam Dralle (Greenwood Class of 2015) didn’t factor in the decision after tossing five innings in Saturday’s 4-3 baseball loss to visiting Neumann (Pa.).

Dralle allowed only two unearned runs in five innings and finished with three strikeouts.

Cairn (11-9 overall, 3-6 Colonial States Athletic Conference) returns to action Tuesday with a home doubleheader against St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn.

Centre senior Trevor Brewer (Greenwood Class of 2013) got a no-decision in Saturday’s 7-6 baseball loss to visiting conference rival Hendrix (Ark.).

Brewer pitched five innings for the Colonels, allowing two earned runs.

In Centre’s 6-3 loss in the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader, Brewer delivered a pinch-hit single in his only appearance.

On Sunday, Brewer started at designated hitter and was 1-for-2 with a run scored in the Colonels’ 10-7 loss.

Centre (14-15 overall, 4-11 Southern Athletic Association) is back in action Tuesday at home against Berea for a doubleheader.

Southeastern Illinois sophomore John Halcomb (Greenwood Class of 2015) had a productive weekend series batting in the leadoff spot against Lake Land (Ill.).

In Friday’s opener, Halcomb – who played center field in all three games – was 1-for-5 with an RBI and scored a run in a 10-7 loss.

On Saturday in the opener of a doubleheader, Halcomb had two sacrifice fly RBIs in a 14-4 loss. Then in the nightcap, Halcomb had a hit in a 2-1 loss.

Southeastern Illinois (13-16) is back in action Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Kaskaskia (Ill.).

Kentucky senior Beck Pennington (Greenwood Class of 2012) pulled the Wildcats even with his singles victory against Alabama on Sunday, but the Crimson Tide won the next match to score a 4-3 win at the Boone Tennis Complex in Lexington.

Pennington, playing No. 3 singles for UK, battled past Alabama’s Alexey Nesterov for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

In doubles play, Pennington and Enzo Wallart (ranked No. 32 nationally) dropped a 6-4 decision to the Tide’s Mazen Osama and Spencer Richey (No. 38 nationally) at No. 1 doubles.

Kentucky, ranked No. 23 nationally, is back in action April 14 at Arkansas.
