Hilltoppers drop to .500 with softball loss to UAB

Western Kentucky’s softball team fell to .500 on the season with a 3-2 loss to Conference USA rival UAB on Sunday at the WKU Softball Complex.
Following a split decision in Saturday’s doubleheader, sophomore Rebekah Engelhardt put WKU up 1-0 in the fourth inning with a home run off the foul pole in left field. WKU leads C-USA with 32 homers this season.
UAB rallied for three runs in the fifth. WKU scored its final run in the seventh on Taylor Proctor’s RBI groundout.
The Hilltoppers dropped to 20-20 overall and 4-8 in C-USA play. UAB improved to 13-21 overall and 5-4 in league action.
WKU’s Kathryn Downing took the loss in the circle, falling to 11-7 on the season. The senior had three strikeouts. Haylee Towers pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the Hilltoppers, allowing two hits while striking out two.
The Hilltoppers have a game Wednesday at No. 16 Kentucky before heading to El Paso, Texas, for a series at UTEP slated to start Saturday.{&end}
