Aikey fires shutout to pitch WKU pat Alabama A&M

Behind the first complete-game shutout of Kelsey Aikey’s career, Western Kentucky’s softball team closed its spring break road trip with a 4-0 win at Alabama A&M on Thursday.

The Hilltoppers capitalized on four Lady Bulldog errors.

With the win, the Hilltoppers are now 18-10, surpassing last season’s win total. Alabama A&M fell to 7-16 with the loss.

WKU totaled just three hits. Paige Carter and Aikey each drove in a run, while Brittany Vaughn scored two runs for the Hilltoppers.

Aikey, a freshman, allowed just three walks while striking out five in the contest to earn the win.

Conference USA play will resume Saturday for the Hilltoppers as preseason favorite Florida Atlantic comes to town for a three-game series. Play will open on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the WKU Softball Complex.
