Hilltoppers battle back from 4-0 hole, beat Samford

Western Kentucky’s softball team overcame a four-run deficit Tuesday afternoon to record a 7-4 win at Samford in Birmingham, Ala.
The Hilltoppers (17-9) gave up two runs in both the first and third innings, then scored one in the fourth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh and three more in the eighth.
Designated player Jordan Mauch hit a home run, her sixth of the season, and reached base four times in five plate appearances.
Second baseman/shortstop Brittany Vaughn drove in two runs, while Mauch, Paige Carter, Taylor Proctor and Haylee Towers notched one RBI each.
WKU pitcher Kathryn Downing (10-2) pitched 7.1 innings, giving up four runs, all earned, on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Towers pitched 0.2 scoreless innings and earned her first save.
WKU will be back in action Wednesday, playing at Jacksonville State at 4 p.m.
