Western Kentucky’s women’s tennis squad earned a 5-2 victory over Austin Peay on Friday at the Governors Tennis Center in Clarksville, Tenn.

The win over Austin Peay (2-3) marks the second time in the Jonatan Berhane era that WKU (6-2) has won four straight matches.

WKU began Friday’s match once again winning the doubles point, its sixth time this spring. At the No. 1 spot, the pair of Lisa Friess and Andreanna Christopoulou took down the Governors’ sister-duo of Lidia and Claudia Yanes Garcia, 6-3. WKU won by the same score at the No. 2 spot, as the freshman twosome of Natalia De Ugarte and Cindy Oest won their fourth-straight match.

After claiming the doubles point, senior Elpida Malamou at the top rallied after losing 7-5 in the first set to mount a 6-4, 6-0 comeback to push her singles winning streak, dating back to last year, to 20 matches. The Governors answered with Claudia Yanes Garcia defeating Christopoulou 6-1, 7-6 and Helena Kupping beating Cindy Oest 6-1, 6-2 to tie the match, 2-2.

WKU’s Monica Malinen won at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-2 to give the Lady Toppers an edge and Violetta Shatalova followed suit with a 6-4, 6-1 win to preserve the victory.
