Make plans for Empty Bowls

As citizens of the wealthiest nation in the world, it is sometimes hard to wrap our heads around the reality that some of our neighbors are hungry and often miss meals.

It is good that we are a compassionate people who look out for those who are hungry and have to wake up every day wondering where their next meal will come from.

In our city, we are fortunate to have many organizations and charity events that provide food and money for those who are hungry.

One innovative program that brings awareness to the plight of the hungry is called Empty Bowls, which raises money for local food banks.

This year marks the fifth Empty Bowls event. Last year was very successful – $17,000 was raised, surpassing a goal of $15,000. This year’s goal is to raise $20,000.

Hopefully, all involved will help reach this goal.

On Feb. 23, people will gather at Sloan Convention Center from 5 to 8 p.m. and make a $10 donation. Attendees will choose a dish from a table loaded with bowls provided by local volunteers, eat bread and soup and take the bowl home with them to serve as a reminder of the continuing prevalence of hunger.

Funds raised from the event will entirely go to HOTEL INC’s MannaMart and University Street Church of Christ’s Life Care Ministry, both of which are based in Bowling Green.

In a new twist for the event, this year marks the first time there will be “celebrity bowls” that were painted by community officials, including Warren County Attorney Amy Milliken, Judge-Executive Mike Buchanon and Bowling Green Independent School District Superintendent Gary Fields, to be auctioned at the event.

It reflects well on these officials to take time out of their busy schedules and help such a wonderful cause.

Fields put it best in talking about this great cause when he said it’s a rallying cry we can all get behind.

We concur and wish all involved the best in this most worthwhile endeavor.
