New leadership emerged on the Board of Education for the Bowling Green Independent School District following elections for a new chair and vice chair Monday night.
The board elected Christine Dressler to serve as chairwoman and Jane Wilson as vice chairwoman, board member Deborah Williams told the Daily News on Tuesday. Dressler previously served as the board’s vice chairwoman.
Dressler and Wilson will also have the same posts for the Bowling Green Independent School District Finance Corporation. The corporation owns school property, Williams said.
The board also elected Jeff Herron, the district’s finance officer, as treasurer of the corporation. It named Superintendent Gary Fields as secretary of the corporation as well. The newly elected officials will serve two-year terms expiring Dec. 31, 2018.
In other business, Williams said the board approved a bid to start a comprehensive site survey of the land on which Bowling Green High School sits. She said the land has yet to be surveyed in full.
“While there’s been pieces done on it, this was important to do an entire site survey,” she said.
Williams said the survey will help officials plan and manage the land over time.
The board also approved a draft budget, which is the first of three budgets the district will work through as it figures out its obligations.
Herron said in an interview the draft budget has a general fund of $40,465,657.
“I’m projecting our beginning balance to go up $340,000,” because of carry forward money from last year, he said. With so much construction in town, Herron also predicts an increase in revenue brought in from property tax being that there’s more property to assess. However, the district could also see an increased expense for mandated pay raises, he said.
