Fruit of the Loom donates apparel

Fruit of the Loom Inc. donated more than 240,000 women’s intimate apparel items to Hurricane Matthew victims in South Carolina.

The donation valued at more than $431,000 was delivered to Adventist Community Services in Mullins County, S.C.

“The record-breaking destruction from Hurricane Matthew goes beyond the physical damages across the region,” Steve Stillwell, assistant director for Carolina Conference Adventist Disaster Relief, said in a release. “Many lost their homes, but many more do not have access to clean clothing. It’s comforting that Fruit of the Loom recognizes the dire need for basic apparel items. We are grateful for their donation and humbled by their generosity.”

Bowling Green-based Fruit of the Loom employs 200 people at its distribution center in Summerville, S.C. With a recent expansion that is doubling the size of the distribution center, Fruit of the Loom is adding 50 more jobs there.

“The devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew closely affected our employees, friends and neighbors in South Carolina and lending a hand became an immediate priority for us at Fruit of the Loom,” Rick Medlin, president and chief executive officer of Fruit of the Loom, said in the release. “We hope our donation provides relief to those impacted by this historic storm.”

The company also was recently recognized for its commitment to socially responsible practices in Central America.

For the eighth consecutive year it received a Corporate Social Responsibility Seal from FUNDAHRSE an awards ceremony in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

FUNDAHRSE is Fundación Hondureña de Responsabilidad Social Empresarial, an organization established to promote responsible business practices in Honduras, a release said.

“Fruit of the Loom is extremely proud to receive this award in recognition of our CSR efforts,” Medlin said in the release. “Our company is committed to ensuring that we conduct business in a socially responsible fashion in order to minimize our impact on the environment and make a real difference in the communities where we work and live.”

FUNDAHRSE selects companies based on criteria such as employee development programs, transparency, community development projects, government relations and environmental impact management.

Junior Achievement receives grant

Junior Achievement of South Central Kentucky received a $1,500 grant from the ARGI Gives Community Grant Program. The money will support the program, Moving Bowling Green’s Most At-Risk Youth to Success.

With the help of ARGI Gives, Junior Achievement will broaden the education and understanding of key concepts that will be critical to students’ futures, a release said.

Students in those classrooms will receive grade-specific programs and discover the intricacies of a city’s resources, how communities work together for success, and they will begin recognizing how a complete K-12 and postsecondary education will lead to broader career opportunities.

“We are very thankful and appreciative of the support of the ARGI Gives Grant Program,” President Drew Martin of Junior Achievement of South Central Kentucky said in the release.

ARGI Gives awards quarterly grants to nonprofit and charitable organizations through a competitive application and review process.
