A 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue driven by Bobby Ammons, 24, of Franklin, was traveling south when it dropped off the right shoulder for an unknown reason and struck a tree head-on.

Joshua Stilts, 36, of Smiths Grove, was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither he nor Ammons was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to KSP.

Ammons was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and was transported to Muhlenberg Community Hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.

After being released from the hospital, Ammons was taken to Muhlenberg County Detention Center and lodged on charges of murder and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence (second offense in 10 years, aggravating circumstances).

Online detention center records show no bond set for Ammons.
