Lady Tops’ Lucas earns 10th career C-USA Setter of the Week honor

After facilitating the Western Kentucky volleyball team to a .462 weekend hitting percentage and registering 69 assists, junior Jessica Lucas was named the Conference USA Setter of the Week, announced the league office Monday.

Lucas has now earned 10 C-USA Setter of the Week accolades during her volleyball career with the Lady Toppers, including five honors through six weeks of the 2016 season.

Lucas is  the first student-athlete in C-USA history to win five awards of any sort in the first six weeks of a season.

On Friday night, Lucas and the Lady Toppers took down Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., in a 3-0 sweep that saw WKU hit .340 as a squad. Lucas recorded 35 assists to go along with six digs, four kills, three block assists and a service ace. Two WKU hitters posted double-digit kills in the match as the team registered 44 kills against just 10 errors on 100 attacks.

In Sunday’s match at Middle Tennessee, Lucas tallied 34 more assists in the 3-0 sweep and led the WKU offense to a .500 hitting clip for the second time this season. Junior outside hitter Alyssa Cavanaugh posted a career-high and 2016 C-USA best .789 hitting percentage with 15 kills. In the victory, Lucas also contributed seven digs, three kills and a solo block.

Combined, Lucas averaged 11.50 assists per set in WKU’s pair of weekend contests in addition to 2.17 digs per set. Lucas and all six offensive attackers for the Lady Toppers registered a .300 hitting percentage or better in the pair of weekend matches.

WKU is now 16-2 on the season, including a perfect 4-0  in C-USA action. The Lady Toppers will head to Hattiesburg, Miss., to play Southern Miss on Thursday.
