Buckner was arrested on Aug. 9, a few hours after city police responded to reports of a shooting and found Mason South, 19, of Bowling Green, at the back of the park with a gunshot wound to the head.

Warren Circuit Judge Steve Wilson set a $500,000 cash bond for Buckner after his indictment last week by a Warren County grand jury.

Buckner’s attorney, Matt Baker, entered a not guilty plea on his client’s behalf and requested a bond hearing for Buckner “sooner, rather than later.”

Wilson set a bond hearing for Thursday and a pretrial conference for Nov. 28.

According to Bowling Green Police Department records, Mason South’s brother, Ethan South, contacted police to report that Buckner had shot Mason South.

Ethan South told police that he saw Buckner shoot his brother “after they had been in a physical altercation and that Mason South had his hands up just before he was shot, police records show.

“Buckner confessed to shooting the victim after a physical altercation had taken place between the two,” Buckner’s arrest citation stated. “Buckner advised after the fight was over he went to his backpack, retrieved a gun and fired a warning shot to scare them. Buckner advised words were exchanged and Buckner pointed the gun at the victim and shot him.”

A juvenile witness told the BGPD that she, Ethan South and another person had been at a party earlier in the evening, and the group gathered at the park afterward.

The witness told police that an argument began about whether Bowling Green High School or South Warren High School had the better football team, escalating into a physical confrontation.

The witness said she walked away from the argument and then heard several gunshots before hearing Buckner say “I need to get out of here,” police records show.

Buckner reportedly ran from the scene and was arrested a few hours after the shooting near Hogle Drive and Logan Way.

Charged initially with first-degree assault, the six counts of first-degree wanton endangerment came after the case was presented to a grand jury.
