Albarado guides a pair to stakes wins

FRANKLIN — Saturday wasn’t a good day to be a favorite in the four stakes races at Kentucky Downs, but it was a good day to be Robby Albarado.
The jockey rode two stakes winners on the opening day of the 2016 live meet at the Franklin grass course. Albarado led Secret Someone to a win in the Ladies Turf and followed that with a win aboard Successful Native in the Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint.
“This place is getting a lot of hype lately,” Albarado said. “It’s a great quality of horses that are coming here and … it’s only going to get better here in Kentucky.”
Secret Someone came charging down the stretch to overtake favorite Cash Control and win in 1:38. Secret Someone came five wide with a half mile to go to pull away by 3 3/4 lengths.
“I had a good trip,” Albarado said. “I could see the whole field at the bottom of the hill. I could see the favorite was between horses, which I applauded that. It kind of helped me a little bit. I expected a nice race from her, but not this explosive.
“The whole race I felt like I could win this easily.”
It was a bounce-back win for Secret Someone, who finished eighth in the 1 3/16-mile Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington Park last month.
“I don’t think that was her distance,” Albarado said. “I think today is her best distance.”
While Secret Someone came from the back of the pack to win the Ladies Turf, Albarado was able to lead Successful Native to a wire-to-wire win in the 6 1/2 furlong race. Successful Native edged Hogy by a neck in a time of 1:17.51. Post time favorite Undrafted finished fourth.
“He broke really well, so I took advantage of the inside,” Albarado said. “He came home fast; he’s a nice horse.”
The biggest long shot of the day in the four stakes races was 44-1 All Right, ridden by Channing Hill, who broke his maiden to win the seven-furlong Kentucky Downs Juvenile by a neck over a hard-charging Parlor.
All Right won after a second-place finish in his debut at Ellis Park last month.
“He surprised me how well he broke,” Hill said. “He broke super, super well. I really was expecting the field to be a little more contentious (with) the pace. I really wasn’t expecting to stay close. I was really expecting to pick up the pieces.
“Today he showed his immaturity a little bit once he made the lead, but he showed his class by staying in front.”
The lone favorite to win in stakes races on Saturday was Lull, who bounced back from her previous race where she clipped heels and fell in a stakes race at Saratoga to win the seven-furlong Exacta Systems Juvenile Fillies by 1 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:26.04.
Ridden by Brian Hernandez, Lull stalked the pace from the rail before making a move to the outside and charging past runner-up Caroline Test.
“She had a beautiful trip,” Hernandez said. “She handled it and she took me around there.”
Assistant trainer Tomas Brandenourger said it was good to see Lull bounce back from the previous race.
“Her last start was very bad, unfortunately,” Brandenourger said. “She was going okay on the lead and she just clipped heels, so we couldn’t judge her of course. We were just hoping that she would come back okay, and she did so she came back quickly and proved to us that she is fine. This was a great day for us and the owner.”
Saturday’s opening day featured 10 races total.
Live racing will continue will another 10-race card on Thursday. Post time for the first race is 1:25 p.m.
