The Greenwood volleyball team kept rolling along with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-20) sweep over previously unbeaten Logan County on Thursday at Greenwood High School.
Ranked No. 18 in the state in the latest coaches’ poll, Greenwood used strong play at the net to improve 13-1 overall, 5-0 in region play.
“Logan posed a lot of challenges,” Greenwood coach Jason Reels said. “They are a great offensive team and a really great defensive team. I really thought they put a lot of pressure on us serving, but I thought our ball control really started it out. We passed well tonight. When we pass well, we are able to run our offense and (junior server Rileigh Stivers) does a great job of distributing to all of our hitters. I thought that was the key tonight.”
Stivers had 33 assists and 12 digs for Greenwood, which had 34 kills including 10 each from Leah Martens and Emma Bender.
“We have a lot of great hitters and it gives us a lot of opportunities to run our offense,” Stivers said. “Our passing was pretty good tonight. It allowed us to do a lot of the things that we needed to do.”
The Lady Gators broke away late in Game 1 – breaking an 18-18 tie to close on a 7-1 run – and never trailed in the second set with Bender getting three kills, including one on the final point that gave Greenwood a 2-0 lead.
Greenwood built a 16-12 lead after a kill from Martens in Game 3 before a service error opened the door for Logan County (5-1). The Lady Cougars rallied to tie 16-16 after the error, but gave Greenwood the lead back on a service error.
Martens followed with three straight aces and the Lady Gators were not threatened again.
Reels said he can see the confidence growing in his team as it continues to pile up the wins this season.
“This is the same group as last year,” Reels said. “They are really starting to come together as a unit. Our defense out there tonight was phenomenal. Not very many balls hit the floor tonight without us on the floor after it. That is what I am most pleased (with).”
Kerra Cornist had 12 kills for Logan County, while Shelby Hardison added nine kills.
“They definitely showed us things we need to work on,” Logan County coach Steven Lyne said. “We just finished up a bunch of district games and it wasn’t really strong competitively there. This was definitely good to see where we stand. We have a lot of things to work on and a lot of time to clean it up.”
Both teams return to action at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Greenwood will play at Allen County-Scottsville, while Logan County will host Franklin-Simpson.
