Hoping to break the Guinness World Record of 250 people lounging in hammocks for five minutes, Dawn Quillien has organized the Hangin’ Five event for July 23 at Basil Griffin Park, with all proceeds going to benefit the Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society.
Quillien wants to see the park filled with at least 250 to 300 hammocks. A long-time hammock owner, she said she has always wanted to be involved with a Guinness World Record event, so this seemed like a good idea. The idea for this event has been on her mind for several years, and Quillien decided now was the time and that she would make it a local charity event.
“I think this is going to be a fun event,” Quillien said. “It gets the community involved in a charity and it’s a chance to be a part of breaking a world record.”
Volunteering at the humane society, Quillien said she has walked dogs, spent time with the animals and thinks it is an organization worth raising money for.
“I just know where the money goes with them and I know they’re a great organization,” Quillien said.
The humane society is a nonprofit agency that relies heavily on donations to pay for medical bills of sick and injured animals, supplies such as food and water bowls and educational outreach programs. Leah Lawrence, adoption center manager, said they are excited about this event.
“We’re hoping that they have a huge turnout,” Lawrence said. “It’s very nice of them to do a fundraiser for us. We will have a staff member and volunteers out there to talk to the participants about the humane society and what we do for the community.”
There is a $10 minimum participation donation per person, which will go to the humane society. Gates open that Saturday at 8 a.m. and on-site registration begins at 9 a.m. An air horn will signal the official starting time at 11 a.m. for the five minutes of hammock-hanging.
The rules are that any type of hammock is allowed, only one person per hammock, any person who has a part of their body touch touch the ground before the five minutes is up will be discounted from the total and all participants must remain in the marked area until the final air horn has sounded.
Food will be available at the event from Food Vendor and PopWorks.
If the record is broken, all participants will receive a Guinness World Record certificate with their name on it. Also, all participants will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a 40 Degree Boone Zip Hammock by Sheltowee Hammock Co.
