Emmy-nominated actor coming to Bowling Green

Warren County Public Library will host John Ratzenberger, an Emmy-nominated actor and an accomplished screenwriter, director, producer and author, at 6 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Knicely Conference Center.

Ratzenberger is best known for playing Cliff Clavin on the sitcom “Cheers” from 1982 to 1993. Also, he is a regular voice performer in Pixar animated films such as “Toy Story,” and he highlighted U.S.-made goods and workers on his Travel Channel series “Made in America” from 2004 to 2008. He co-authored a collection of essays and reflections on what makes America great, titled “We’ve Got it Made in America: A Common Man’s Salute to an Uncommon Country.”

“We are always looking for new and interesting people,” Library Director Lisa Rice said. “He has been to Bowling Green before for his show, and I think he’s just interesting at many levels (from) being known as his role in ‘Cheers’ and the one person that has been the voice of Pixar movies. I think he’s been a character in every Pixar film.”

The event is part of the library’s Author Talks series that brings authors from near and far to speak to the community. Rice said the event was a natural progression that started with local authors and as it grew in popularity they realized people were interested in what these individuals had to say.

“We knew there was a need in the community for that kind of series. We’re always looking for someone different and interesting and will appeal to an audience. (Ratzenberger) touches a lot of different areas and having been here before to the (National) Corvette Museum, he would attract a different population in the community. We just try to have something for everyone.”

Library Outreach Manager Monica Edwards agrees that the author series is a great way to attract people to the library and expose residents to people they would never have a chance to meet otherwise.

“For me personally, I think it’s a great outreach because he appeals to all ages. I think it’s a great opportunity for Warren County residents to be able to hear him speak and meet with him,” Edwards said. ” I think it’s a real great opportunity all away around.”

Rice said that she has a feeling Ratzenberger will speak about his travels around America and his book, but she thinks it would really be hard for him to go anywhere and not talk about his movie and television career.

This event is free and open to the public. Free tickets are available at all library locations and online at www.warrenpl.org/tickets.
