With the start of school fast approaching, parents might find themselves scrambling to find before- and after-school programs for their kids.
Fortunately, Community Education is now accepting registration. For Community Education spokesman Don Sergent, the programming offered helps parents manage their busy lives.

“In the world we live in a lot of husbands and wives both work and (the) school schedule doesn’t always conform to their work schedule,” he said. “If they’re the sole caregiver and they’ve got work obligations, an after-school program is certainly a great asset to them.”
The before-school program costs $60 a month and the after-school program is $125 monthly. Registration is $30 per account. Programs take place at the student’s school, but not all schools host programs.
“We do snack time, we do educational time, we do homework,” Jarrod Shive, Community Education’s school-age program specialist, said of the after-school programs. “Sometimes we might throw in a field trip every now and then.”
He added that the before-school programs also help students keep up in school.
“If kids need to work on their homework, it’s obviously a good time to do that,” he said.
Sergent added, the kids are also in good hands. Students studying education at Western Kentucky University help out with the programs and later go on to be teachers.

“It’s a great time to catch up on homework or any kind of projects that kids have,” Shive said. “It’s a good way to keep them doing something positive.”
