Can’t decide what to see this weekend?
Bowling Green Daily News film critic Micheal Compton is here to tell you the best – and worst – now playing at your local cineplex.
Alice Through the Looking Glass (D)
A lackluster sequel that I’m pretty sure no one was clamoring for, with even the visual effects mundane. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10)
The BFG (Not reviewed at this time)
(Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas, Franklin Drive-In)
Captain America: Civil War (B)
This may not be quite up to the same level as the previous “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” but it is still a satisfying entry into a universe that continues to expand. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10)
Central Intelligence (B-)
Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart prove to be a fun duo in this action comedy that allows Johnson to show a goofy, awkward side, while pulling back the reigns on Hart’s sometimes over the top style of comedy. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10 and Highland Cinemas)
The Conjuring 2 (B)
Building off the success of its predecessor, “The Conjuring 2” is another solid haunted house thriller. It may not be quite as good as the original, which was a breath of fresh air when it was released three summers ago, but it is still a cut above most films in this genre. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
Finding Dory (B)
The sequel to “Finding Nemo” isn’t quite up to the original, but still full of wonder with a little bit of heart – even if it starts to get a little repetitive in the third act. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Highland Cinemas, Franklin Drive-In)
Free State of Jones (B-)
This civil war era tale featuring Matthew McConaughey is effective, but suffers from being a film that is both too long and not long enough at the same time.(Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Highland Cinemas)
Independence Day: Resurgence (D)
(Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
The Legend of Tarzan (C)
This attempt to tweak some new life into an old tale does have a few things work in its favor, but ultimately it just doesn’t do enough to separate itself from the Tarzan pack – or the summer blockbuster pack.
(Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Highland Cinemas)
Me Before You (C)
Despite Emilia Clarke’s endearing performance as an eternally optimistic young woman who takes a job caring for a paralyzed man (Sam Clafin), the film ultimately falls apart by becoming just another predictable tear-jerker romance. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
Now You See Me 2 (C)
This sequel to the 2013 surprise hit about double crossing magicians proves to be nothing more than one big slight-of-hand trick.
Only this time, there really is nothing to see here. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
The Purge: Election Year (Not reviewed at this time)
(Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10, Highland Cinemas)
The Shallows (B-)
A new take on the old “Jaws” formula has enough to suspense to satisfy, even if it kinda jumps the shark in the final act. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Highland Cinemas)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (C)
This installment is slightly better than the 2014 reboot, a little more self aware and fun. When the action stops however, and the film tries to be something more than fluff, it fails to connect. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12)
Warcraft (F)
If you take “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Hobbit” and “Star Wars” franchises and mix them up in a blender, I’m pretty sure the result would be the new film “Warcraft” – a mind-numbingly dull fantasy world excursion based on the popular video game.
This may not be the worst movie of the year, but it is definitely the worst use of $160 million. (Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10)
X-Men Apocalypse (C)
The latest in the Marvel franchise that is overstuffed and a bit of a mess, taking the franchise a step or two back from previous entries. (Regal Bowling Green Stadium 12, Regal Greenwood Mall Stadium 10)
