Green River Scrubs Paddle for Puppets will be Saturday on Drakes Creek at Phil Moore Park at 7101 Scottsville Road.
Registration and check-in will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m., with the event at 10 a.m. Participants and their boats will be shuttled from Phil Moore Park to Romanza Johnson Park. Registration is $25 in advance and $35 the day of the event. It includes the paddle, lunch by Lost River Pizza, a goodie bag and a T-shirt. There will be a drawing for a new kayak.
Pre-registration can be done by calling 270-935-5080, going online at kykob.org or visiting Green River Scrubs and Uniform at 615 Chestnut St. or South Central Kentucky Kids on the Block at 958 Collett Ave.
Proceeds will benefit Kids on the Block puppet troupe.
“It’s a good way to socialize and support a charity. It’s a good family fun event,” Kids on the Block Executive Director Ashley Reynolds said. “You’re getting in nature. You’re getting disconnected with technology. It’s good for spending time with family.”
It’s a laid-back trip that can be done with canoes or kayaks, Reynolds said.
“People can paddle at their own pace. There will be someone in the front and the back,” she said. “It’s for all levels – advance paddlers and beginning paddlers.”
Paddle for Puppets is one of Kids on the Block’s newest fundraisers to help the puppet troupe continue its local programs for children, Reynolds said.
“We had it last year at Mitch McConnell Park, but we moved it to Drakes Creek at Phil Moore Park because that’s where the paddle community is,” she said.
The idea for the fundraiser came from board member Keith Coffman, Reynolds said.
“He is passionate about paddling and Kids on the Block,” she said. “He thought it would be a good way to combine the two things.”
Tangie Stivers, owner of Green River Scrubs and Uniforms, said the fundraiser was a natural fit to sponsor.
“I love to paddle. I named this place Green River because it’s one of my favorite places to paddle,” she said. “We have a kayak in our logo, and we keep a kayak in our store for display. A lot of people will come in and ask about the best place to kayak.”
Bowling Green Canoe and Kayaking Club will help with the event, Stivers said.
“I asked those guys about helping when I heard about the event, and they were ready to jump in,” she said. “It’s always nice to have community support.”
The paddlers won’t simply go down the water, Stivers said.
“We will pick up some trash while paddling,” she said. “We’re getting people to be good stewards of the waterways and keeping them clean. It’s a win-win for everybody.”
Stivers wants lots of community participation and is happy to help.
“I want to give back to Kids on the Block and clean up the water,” she said. “I feel very, very lucky.”
