Tight end Steve Donatell has enrolled at WKU, the school confirmed Monday. He’s a graduate transfer from Wake Forest with one season of eligibility left.
Donatell – a 6-foot-6, 230-pound native of Lone Tree, Colo. – caught three passes for 31 yards last season for the Demon Deacons.
He played the 2014 season at linebacker, notching eight tackles before transitioning to tight end in spring 2015.
Donatell started Wake Forest’s first three games in 2013 at outside linebacker before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He also had offers from Nebraska and Colorado out of Highlands Ranch (Colo.) High School.
Donatell told the Daily News in March that he had good conversations with coach Jeff Brohm and new tight ends coach Tony Levine. He also has a previous relationship with defensive coordinator Nick Holt, who played at Pacific for Donatell’s father, Ed.
“I’m more of a leaner guy,” Donatell said. “I’m not a big, bruiser-type guy.
“I can obviously block and whatever they need me to do, but I think my skill set and body is more of a receiving tight end, which I think fits their system, while also being able to block and get the correct assignments.”
Donatell joins a Hilltopper tight end position group that includes Shaquille Johnson, Desmond Maxwell, Nick True, Wesley Vollmer and Deon Yelder.
