Left-hander Cody Reed stifled the Bowling Green Hot Rods offense and Kane County (Ill.) was able to even the series with a 6-0 win over BG on Saturday at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The 2014 second-round draft pick tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings, scattering three hits with 11 strikeouts, and the bullpen finished it out as Bowling Green (11-12) was shut out for the first time this season.

“He pitched really good,” BG manager Reinaldo Ruiz said. “We have to give them credit, their starter was really good tonight and we couldn’t do much against him and then the other two guys pitched really well, too. It was one of those nights. The offense couldn’t get it done tonight, but we will get them tomorrow.”

Reed retired the first 14 batters he faced before Angel Perez singled with two outs in the fifth. Bowling Green’s best chance to score off Reed came in the sixth, when two runners reached, but reliever Jency Solis got Manny Sanchez to ground out.

The Hot Rods also threatened in the eighth, loading the bases on with two outs, but Sanchez struck out to end the inning.

Bowling Green finished with four hits total.

“Not many chances,” Ruiz said. “The only chances we had were with two outs. We couldn’t get a big hit. It was one of those days where the offense couldn’t do much.”

Kane County (13-9) strung together three straight hits in the third – including a two-run double from Raymel Flores – to build a 3-0 lead.

Zach Nehrir added an RBI double in the fourth and Josh Anderson capped the scoring with a two-run shot in the sixth.

Michael Velasquez took the loss for the Hot Rods, falling to 0-3 on the season. Velasquez allowed six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

ROSTER MOVES

The Hot Rods announced a trio of roster moves prior to Saturday’s game.

Infielder Joe McCarthy was placed on the disabled list, while relief pitcher Ian Gibaut was promoted to Port Charlotte (Fla.) in the High A Florida State League. Gibaut made seven appearances with Bowling Green, allowing one earned run in 9 2/3 innings with 18 strikeouts.

“Gibaut pitched really well for us and he deserved it,” Ruiz said. “Good for him. It’s going to be a tough loss for for us, but he deserves the promotion.

“(Joe’s) back is still bothering him. We’re going to take it easy with him, take it slow.”

Catcher Daniel De La Calle was promoted to the Hot Rods from extended spring training.
