A domestic violence call in Portland, Tenn., Wednesday night led to a two-state police pursuit involving multiple agencies and ended in Bowling Green when Kentucky State Police used their cruisers to stop the fleeing car.
“This started from a domestic call,” Portland police Chief Dewel Scruggs said. “He left the scene of a domestic (assault) in Portland. To the best of my knowledge he left the scene before the officers got there. One of the officers en route saw him, tried to do a traffic stop on him and he ran.”
The man, who police have identified as Bret Chadick, 26, of Portland, is facing numerous felony charges in Kentucky, according to a news release from KSP. He will also likely be charged with domestic assault and other offenses in Tennessee, Scruggs said.
“I know our officers have dealt with him quite a bit,” Scruggs said. “He’s considered a frequent flyer for us.”
Portland police have been called to previous domestic and public drunkenness incidents involving Chadick, Scruggs said.
The incident began at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Scruggs said. Portland officers pursued Chadick, who was driving a white BMW, and the pursuit was picked up by city police in White House, Tenn.
KSP noted the driver “was observed covered in blood” when Portland police began the pursuit, according to the KSP release.
At about 10:43 p.m., KSP troopers found the vehicle traveling north on Interstate 65 near mile marker 5. Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver fled and led police through Simpson and Warren counties before the pursuit ended in Bowling Green.
Chadick is accused of striking multiple police cruisers during the pursuit and driving at a high speed in an attempt to get away, according to the release.
Tire deflation devices were used in Bowling Green to assist in stopping him, but the pursuit ended when a trooper used a pit maneuver to cause the car to spin and another trooper used his cruiser to block Chadick from being able to drive any further, KSP Post 3 spokesman Trooper B.J. Eaton said.
Chadick was lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail at 3:57 a.m. Thursday and is charged with six counts of first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, first-degree fleeing or evading police in a motor vehicle, first-degree criminal mischief, operating a motor vehicle under the influence alcohol/drugs, fourth or greater offense (aggravating circumstances), driving DUI on a suspended license, third offense (aggravating circumstances), resisting arrest, speeding 26 mph or greater, failure of owner to maintain required insurance and improper display of registration plates. Police also served a bench warrant on Chadick on a failure to appear allegation from another jurisdiction.
Chadick was arraigned Thursday in Warren District Court, where he pleaded not guilty. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.
“The best news is no one got hurt last night to a serious extent,” Scruggs said.
