Sam Bradford is reportedly ‘mad’ that Eagles traded up to draft a quarterback

The Philadelphia Eagles’ trade Wednesday for the No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft puts them in position to select one of the top-rated quarterbacks, presumably either Jared Goff or Carson Wentz. And Sam Bradford is not at all thrilled about it.
Bradford is the Eagles’ incumbent starter at quarterback, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the sixth-year veteran is “mad” that he’s about to get some major competition at his position. Here is what Schefter posted on Facebook:

“It’s only natural, but those who have spoken to Sam Bradford say he is not happy with today’s trade.
” ‘He’s hot,’ said one source. ‘Who wouldn’t be? This is Philly saying, ‘We don’t see [you] as long-term answer.’ He’s mad and wants to show everyone who’s best.’ “
Bradford is right to think that Philadelphia doesn’t appear to have him in its long-range plans, because the team surely didn’t give up first-, second- and third-round picks in order to draft a player who will never see the field. Bradford may not need to come out of the gate with his “best,” but if the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft doesn’t play particularly well in the first half of the season, he could find himself on a very short leash.
If it’s any comfort to him, Bradford isn’t the only one in Philadelphia befuddled, if not angered, by the team’s move. Not only did the Eagles sign him to a two-year, $36 million contract, with $22 million fully guaranteed, in the offseason, but they also signed another quarterback, Chase Daniel, to a three-year, $21 million deal, with $12 million guaranteed. Add in the four-year, $25 million contract the No. 2 pick can expect to receive, and the team will have allocated a staggering amount of money to a position that only sees one player on the field at a time in a league with a salary cap.
However, to Eagles Executive Vice President Howie Roseman, garnering an embarrassment of riches at the game’s most important spot makes for smart strategy. “We’re going to invest in quarterbacks,” he said Wednesday (via NFL.com).
“We had time as an organization to study: What are the keys to winning?” Roseman continued. “What are the keys to being a championship caliber over a long period of time? … It’s quarterbacks.”

Roseman also said, “Let me be clear, Sam Bradford is our starting quarterback,” which probably comes as small comfort to former Ram. On the other hand, Bradford can take plenty of comfort in the fact that he’s set for another gigantic payday, this after already pocketing about $78 million in his career, or $1 million per touchdown pass.
The fact is that the Eagles have no reason for any great confidence in Bradford, who threw for a career-high 3,725 yards last season under former head coach Chip Kelly, with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. The oft-injured Bradford has never thrown for more than 21 scores in any of his five seasons played – he sat out the 2014 campaign altogether with a torn anterior cruciate ligament – and it’s not like he’s a threat to run for much of anything.
It’s entirely possible that the Eagles are happy to keep Bradford around for one more season as the starter, with Daniel providing valuable insurance against another injury, while Goff or Wentz sits and learns for a year. Then Philadelphia could possibly trade away Bradford for a solid return, or, if he has a terrific season, the team could have something of a happy problem on its hands.
Bradford, meanwhile, is not be happy at the moment, and understandably so. But in trading up to No. 2, the Eagles are merely following the recent example set by the Rams, who moved all the way to No. 1 in pursuit of that ever-elusive franchise quarterback.
Those would be the same Rams who traded Bradford to the Eagles last year. If the quarterback had, as Schefter’s source put it, shown “everyone who’s best” while still with his original squad, then he wouldn’t be in a position to be the slightest bit concerned about what Philadelphia did on Wednesday.
