Dana Commercial Vehicle Manufacturing LLC has issued a notice to employees of its intent to shutter its operations in Glasgow.
There will be a layoff of 191 employees on June 30, according to a federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed Tuesday by the company with the state of Kentucky.
“While the news is difficult to share, it is not a reflection of their work, which has been outstanding,” said Dana spokesman Mark Burd on Wednesday.
The Dana decision was communicated to both shifts of employees Tuesday, Burd said. The plan is to begin the closure procedure in June 2016 and finish by June 2017.
Burd said Dana officials decided to close the plant because an “overall deterioration of the commercial vehicle market in North America.”
Burd said there has been a “significant” decline in the new commercial vehicle market, such as semi-truck vehicles and the light-vehicle cars and passenger trucks market that Dana serves.
The plant was opened in 1972 and was acquired by Dana in 1998. Workers there make gear sets, shafts and secondary gearing components.
The plant is 479,000 square feet and sits on 44.7 acres.
The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce offered a statement of concern Wednesday about the closure.
“We are always disappointed to hear of a company closing and the loss of jobs in our region,” said chamber spokeswoman Kim Phelps in a text message on Wednesday. “Our hearts go out to the families affected and we invite them to visit some of the many companies eager to hire them here in Warren County.”
Dana employees will receive severance pay, outplacement support and will have the opportunity to apply for positions at other Dana facilities. Dana has several facilities in Kentucky, with Henderson’s plant the closest to Glasgow, Burd said.
Dana specializes in drivetrain, sealing and thermal-management technologies for vehicles with both conventional and alternative-energy power trains, according to information on the company website.
Founded in 1904 and based in Maumee, Ohio, the company employs more than 23,000 people in 25 countries on six continents. In 2015, Dana generated sales of nearly $6.1 billion.
