Rippy, Ray help Campbellsville lock up second straight regular-season title

Campbellsville’s softball team wrapped up its second straight Mid-South Conference regular-season championship with a doubleheader sweep of conference rival Georgetown on Saturday.

In the Lady Tigers’ 11-3 victory in Game 2, Campbellsville sophomore Brittany Rippy (Allen County-Scottsville Class of 2013) had a strong day at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort. Rippy had an RBI and scored a run, and senior teammate Shelby Ray (Glasgow Class of 2012) added two runs scored in the win.

Campbellsville (43-7 overall, 27-1 Mid-South Conference) is back in action Wednesday for a non-conference road doubleheader at Bryan (Tenn.).

Lindsey Wilson senior third baseman Ryan Harper (Logan County Class of 2012) helped the Blue Raiders complete a doubleheader sweep against visiting Shawnee State on Saturday.

In Lindsey Wilson’s 4-2 victory in Game 2, Harper went 2 for 2 at the plate.

Lindsey Wilson (32-17 overall, 12-6 Mid-South Conference) is back in action Tuesday at Taylor (Ind.).

Union College senior Zach Gross (Warren East Class of 2011) thrived in the leadoff spot for the Bulldogs in Saturday’s 9-8 extra-innings loss to Bryan (Tenn.).

Gross finished the day 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs.

Union (24-21 overall, 11-10 Appalachian Athletic Conference) is back in action Tuesday at Saint Catharine.

Friday night’s Centre College Twilight meet proved to be a showcase for several former area track standouts.

Campbellsville senior Aaron Johnson (Logan County Class of 2012) threw a personal-best 39.16 meters to take second in the discus. Johnson also finished fourth in the hammer throw (42.52 meters) and had another personal best in the shot put (16th, 11.39 meters).

Fellow Campbellsville senior Clayton Embry (Butler County Class of 2012) also had a big meet, finishing fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (17.70 seconds) and seventh in the hammer throw (40.22 meters) to qualify for next month’s NCCAA Championships in that event. Their efforts helped the Tigers win the men’s team championship.

Centre sophomore Marisa Moore (Glasgow Class of 2014) posted a sixth-place finish in the women’s 5,000-meter run (20:50.83), Centre senior Mary Cundiff (Greenwood Class of 2012) was eighth in the javelin (25.92 meters) and Campbellsville senior Maggie Calvert (Allen County-Scottsville Class of 2012) took eighth in the 1,500-meter run (5:13.20).

Tiffin (Ohio) sophomore Sydnee Anthony (Bowling Green Class of 2014) tallied a third-place finish in the long jump at Saturday’s Hillsdale (Mich.) Border Battle.

Anthony finished with a distance of 5.27 meters in the event.
