Young sisters pour on offense for Georgetown in softball sweep

Sisters Sandy and Katie Young combined for a huge day at the plate for Georgetown’s softball team on Tuesday.

Between the pair, the Young sisters totaled eight hits and six RBIs in a doubleheader sweep against Shawnee State (Ohio).

In Georgetown’s 7-0 win in Game 1, Sandy Young (Allen County-Scottsville Class of 2012) was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored, while Katie Young (Allen County-Scottsville Class of 2014) was 1 for 3 with a solo home run.

Sandy Young, who was named the Mid-South Conference Softball Player of the Week on Monday following the senior’s strong efforts at the plate (3 home runs, 12 RBIs, 11 runs, 6 stolen bases), kept right on producing in the Tigers’ 10-6 victory in the nightcap. Sandy Young was 3 for 4 with a double and with three runs scored and tallied two RBIs. She also stole a base.

Katie Young, a sophomore, matched her older sister with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate in the second game. She had two triples in the win and drove in two runs.

Georgetown (27-15 overall, 18-6 Mid-South Conference) is back in action Friday with a doubleheader against visiting conference rival Campbellsville.

Campbellsville, currently ranked No. 4 in the NAIA softball national poll, showed no signs of slowing down with another doubleheader sweep against Cumberland (Tenn.) on Tuesday, and several former area standouts have been big contributors this season.

In the Tigers’ 7-0 Game 1 win, senior Shelby Ray (Glasgow Class of 2012) was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and stole a base, while sophomore Brittany Rippy (Allen County-Scottsville Class of 2013) went 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Ray added a 2-for-5 effort with a double and two RBIs in Campbellsville’s 12-6 victory in the nightcap, and Rippy contributed with a hit and a run. Freshman Katelyn Merritt (Greenwood Class of 2015) also got in the act with a two-run, pinch-hit single.

Campbellsville (39-7, 23-1 Mid-South Conference) returns to action Friday at conference rival Georgetown for a doubleheader.

Lindsey Wilson sophomore Amy Rogers (Butler County Class of 2014) and Saint Catharine sophomore Lynsie Clark (Butler County Class of 2014) faced off on opposing sides in a Mid-South Conference softball doubleheader in Columbia on Tuesday, and Rogers’ Blue Raiders earned bragging rights with the sweep.

In LWC’s 3-0 win in the opener, Clark was 1 for 2 in the losing effort for the Patriots.

Lindsey Wilson won the nightcap 7-2, and Rogers – starting at third base – was 1 for 2 with an RBI and scored two runs. Clark, the regular starting second baseman for Saint Catharine, was also 1 for 2 with an RBI.

Saint Catharine (21-27, 7-17) is back in action Friday with a home doubleheader against conference foe Shawnee State.

Lindsey Wilson (32-10, 17-3), which stretched its winning streak to 16 straight games, also returns to action Friday with a home doubleheader against Mid-South rival University of the Cumberlands.
