Hot Rods fall in extra innings

For the second straight night, the Bowling Green Hot Rods lost in walk-off fashion, falling 3-2 in 10 innings to South Bend (Ind.) on Tuesday in South Bend.

Eddy Julio Martinez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 10th to force in the winning run, giving South Bend (3-2) a second walk-off win in as many nights and the fourth walk-off win against the Hot Rods since the start of the 2015 season.

Bowling Green (3-3) scored its only runs in the first inning on a two-run single by Joe McCarthy. South Bend got a run back on Elroy Jimenez’s RBI double in the bottom of the first and tied the score on P.J. Higgins’ sacrifice fly in the sixth.

It remained 2-2 until the bottom of the 10th, when BG reliever Taylor Hawkins walked the bases loaded with one out. After getting a line out to first to keep the score tied, Hawkins hit Martinez on the forearm to force the game-winning run in from third base.

Bowling Green finished with eight hits from seven different players. Angel Perez finished with two hits, the lone multi-hit game for the Hot Rods.

BG starting pitcher Alexis Tapia allowed two runs on five with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Reece Karalus tossed three scoreless innings of relief for the Hot Rods.

The series, and five-game road trip, concludes at 6:05 p.m. CDT on Wednesday. Right-hander Jose Mujica (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will make his second start of the season opposite South Bend righty Preston Morrison (0-1, 6.75).
