The Bowling Green Hot Rods were introduced to the media and season ticket holders on Tuesday.

While it is a roster that isn’t peppered with high-profile prospects, it is an intriguing group of 25 that features a mix of 11 international players and five players under the age of 20.

BG Hot Rods manager Reinaldo Ruiz said he likes what he has seen so far, with a lot of potential with the bats and a pitching staff full of hard throwers.

“It’s a good balance,” Ruiz said “We have high school guys. We have college guys. We have guys from Latin America, very young with a lot of talent. It’s very exciting. We are just looking forward to starting the season. I know they are going to do a really good job. We are happy with what we saw in spring training. It’s going to be a good season.”

Seven of the Hot Rods’ international players are part of the pitching staff, including opening day starter Jose Mujica. Cincinnati native Cameron Varga, who will start game two, said the group has gelled well during spring training.

“We are like one big family,” Varga said. “All the language barriers and everything like that, everyone knows each other, so it is really comfortable. It’s very cool and we are all excited to be here together.”

Nine players on this year’s roster finished the year together at Princeton (W. Va.) in the Low A Short-season Appalachian League, losing in the championship series to Greenville (Tenn.).

“I feel like we mix in pretty well, have pretty good team chemistry,” outfielder Zacrey Law said. “I played with most of these guys last year and obviously this year in spring training. I think the team chemistry is going to be even better this year (than last season in Princeton).”

Law is one of five 19-year-olds on the opening day roster. Another is infielder Kevin Padlo, who was acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays from the Colorado Rockies as part of the Corey Dickerson deal in July.

“It’s been pretty easy,” Padlo said. “The guys here are great. The coaching staff is great. The front office is great. They’ve all welcomed me with open arms. It’s been a good transition, so I am happy with that.”

Padlo added the mix should pay dividends as the season begins Thursday against the Dayton Dragons.

“There is definitely some youth here,” Padlo said. “The guys that played here last year talk to us about everything that goes on around here. We get along great with all the guys, so it has been fun.”

Infielder Brandon Lowe said he is impressed with what he has seen from the younger players in camp and agrees this is a good mix that can enjoy a lot of success this season.

“Some kids are under 20, but they play above their age,” Lowe said. “They are really mature and they know how to play the game of baseball, which is great. This group has been together the entire spring training. We’ve been playing together. We know how each one of us plays and it is going to work well for us this season.”

And Ruiz is hopeful that confidence and excitement can help the Hot Rods get back to the playoffs after a two-year drought.

“Hopefully we can perform well,” Ruiz said. “If we can make the playoffs, it is going to be awesome.”
